Cement and ornamental tiles are historical building materials used for the formation of floors and walls. They were extremely widespread in the 19th century - in houses built in the Art Nouveau and Wilhelminian periods, they are to be found above all in entrance areas. At present they are going through something of a renaissance in newer buildings, but also in the restoration and renovation of historical structures, as existing historical tiles can be added to via individual manual processes.

Ornamental Tiles

Majolica tiles, also known as ornamental tiles, are made of fired clay, which are then coated with white tin-glaze and subsequently painted with bright colours. Ceramic created in such apainstaking manner will last for cernuries without its colours losing their shine. Tiles that have forgone glazing and painting are known as 'Terracotta'.
