A spiral staircase is a coiled staircase shape. It coils in a spiral form around a central support column or stair well. If the stairs are supported by a central pillar or spindle, this is called a with a corkscrew staircase. The stair newel post is a permanent pillar, to which the steps are fixed.

Wooden Staircases

Steps in spiral or corkscrew staircases turn in a 360° radial motion around a central point. With a corkscrew staircase, this happens around a pillar in the middle, whereas a spiral staircase does this around a so-called 'hollow spindle'. The staircase area can be circular, oval or rectangular. The direction of the staircase (left or right) depends on the location of the exit, and the diameter varies according the the size of the entrance area.
